How To Get Your Lawn Ready This Spring

How To Get Your Lawn Ready This Spring

Winter is almost over and that means it’s time to get your lawn ready for spring!

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your lawn and prepare it for a season of lush, green growth after the colder months. With the right care and preparation, you can ensure a lush, green, and healthy lawn throughout the growing season.

Clean Up Your Lawn

  • Remove Leaves & Debris – Rake up leaves, twigs, and any leftover winter debris.

  • Check for Thatch Buildup – Thatch (a layer of dead grass) can prevent new growth. Use a rake to loosen and remove it.

  • Tidy Up Edges – Trim around walkways and flower beds for a neat appearance.

Aerate for Healthy Roots

Lawn aeration helps loosen compacted soil, allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots.

  • Use a manual or powered aerator to create small holes in the soil.

  • Focus on high-traffic areas that may be compacted.

  • Aeration is especially important for clay-heavy soils.

Test & Feed Your Lawn with Fertiliser

  • Test Your Soil pH – Use a soil test kit to check nutrient levels. Healthy lawns need a balanced pH.

  • Apply the Right Fertiliser – Choose a slow-release fertiliser to give your grass steady nutrients.

  • If your lawn is patchy, consider a spring starter fertiliser to boost growth.

When to Apply Fertiliser:

  • Early Spring (March-April): Apply a small amount of fertiliser to help your lawn start growing after winter.

  • Mid-Spring (April-May): Apply a full application to promote strong, healthy growth.

Overseed Bare Spots

After winter and your lawn was left with thin or bare patches, overseeding can help.

  • Lightly rake the soil before spreading the seed to improve seed-to-soil contact.

  • Use a seed spreader to ensure even distribution.

  • Cover with a light layer of compost or topsoil to protect the seeds.

  • Keep the area moist for optimal germination.

Mow the Right Way

  • When the grass starts growing, set your mower blade to the correct height—around 2.5 to 3 inches.

  • Follow the One-Third Rule – Never cut more than one-third of the grass height at a time.

  • Avoid mowing when the grass is wet, as this can lead to uneven cuts and clumping.

Control Weeds Early

Spring is the best time to stop weeds before they take over.

  • Apply a Preventive Weed Killer – Prevents weeds like crabgrass before they sprout.

  • Pull Existing Weeds by Hand – Especially in smaller lawns or gardens.

  • Use a Weed & Feed Product – This targets weeds while nourishing your grass.

Water the Right Way

  • Water Deeply, Not Frequently – A good soak 1–2 times a week encourages deep root growth.

  • Water Early in the Morning – This helps prevent evaporation and disease.

  • Avoid Overwatering – Too much water can lead to shallow roots and fungal issues.

Apply a Top Dressing

For an extra boost, consider applying a thin layer of compost or lawn top dressing to improve soil quality and encourage strong root development. This helps retain moisture, enhances microbial activity, and provides essential nutrients.
